An Artistic Moment

Something a bit different happened in the District of Squamish council chamber on April 15, 2025 when the 2024/25 Howe Sound Secondary School Poet Laureate paid a visit.

Florence Webster shared her poem called For The Newly Eighteen Year Olds at the start of the meeting. For a little more than three minutes everyone in the meeting room was riveted. From the opening stanza it was clear Florence has a passion for poetry. A penchant for rhymes. A propensity for prose.

In a room where zoning discussions mix with bylaw readings and parking restriction debates it was a pleasant shift to hear some poetry.

I was impressed with this presentation from a high school student wise beyond their years so I decided to give it a wider audience by posting it here and sharing on my social media channels.
